West End State School expansion

West End State School expansion

The West End State School (WESS) has experienced significant enrolment growth over recent years.

Over the last 10 years, around 5000 additional students have joined Queensland state schools in and around the Brisbane CBD. This growth is set to continue with more than 3000 additional students expected to move into inner Brisbane within the next five years.

WESS currently has more than 1000 students enrolled at the school. To accommodate enrolment growth, the Queensland Government is investing in new infrastructure to meet the demand for additional educational facilities at the school.

The project is part of the Queensland Government’s $808 million Building Future Schools Fund.

To facilitate this expansion, the Department of Education has acquired properties directly adjacent to the existing WESS campus.

Concept design

Cox Architecture was appointed as the architects for expansion of WESS in January 2019.

The concept designs have been developed in close collaboration with the school to ensure their vision for the expansion and connection to the existing campus is realised.

The designs maximise flexible and open areas, will provide exciting new teaching and learning spaces and include valuable outdoor play environments for students. The planned designs also create a campus heart to connect the existing facilities with the new buildings.

Stage 1 will provide a new learning facility on the corner of Horan and Ambleside streets.

Stage 2a will include the administration and library building and an additional learning facility which will be located on Ambleside Street.

Stage 2b will include a performing arts centre on the corner of Horan and Vulture streets plus an undercover carpark.

To create the connected campus, Horan Street will be closed between Vulture Street and Ambleside Street and become part of the school grounds to ensure a safe and contiguous school environment is created. This former street scape will be transformed into outdoor spaces for play and learning.

Master plan

The master plan was released in November 2018 for community feedback. The concept designs build on the master plan and feedback received from the school and local community has been considered in the development of the design.

Project staging

The project will be delivered in stages with Stage 1 to be completed in 2020, and Stage 2 completed for 2022.

As part of the detailed design, a traffic management plan is also being developed. Horan Street, between Vulture Street and Ambleside Street will be closed to traffic from Thursday 11 April 2019. During this time, alternative pick up and drop off arrangements will be in implemented until the new facility comes online in 2020.

Construction of Stage 1 will commence in 2019 following Infrastructure Designation approvals being granted.
